007 First Light draws a moderate 6/10 wokeness score for updating Bond with modern values, diverse casting of M and Moneypenny, and a more idealistic hero who answers to female superiors, even as the core espionage origin story remains largely unchanged.
IO Interactive explicitly framed the game as reflecting 'modern values' and dismissed 'old school Bond' traits as 'tone deaf' today, with narrative director comments adjusting womanizing and other classic elements to feel 'appropriate.' Trailers and marketing featured race- and gender-swapped versions of established characters like M (Priyanga Burford) and Moneypenny (black actress), drawing widespread pre-release accusations of DEI casting and 'ugly' female designs.
Dev interviews emphasized a younger, more idealistic, sincere Bond who follows orders from female superiors, shifting away from traditional Fleming-era or film characterizations without strong in-universe justification beyond 'evolution.' This sparked significant audience backlash, order cancellations, and online debates labeling it woke/DEI pandering, though no Sweet Baby Inc. involvement was confirmed. The core premise remains a standard Bond origin espionage story, but the intentional modernization of casting and tone injects progressive framing that influences character presentation and reception. Steam player feedback focused more on gameplay and DRM than ideology, while critics awarded high scores (87-89 Metacritic).
Methodology: Each score synthesizes audience discourse, critic and aggregator reception, and press coverage — weighed against the work itself, not any single source.
IO Interactive's public framing of the game as reflecting contemporary values, dismissal of 'old school' traits as tone-deaf, and interviews highlighting an idealistic Bond under female authority demonstrate studio-level activism influencing character and tone decisions.

Somewhat woke. Bond isn’t race swapped but others are. Not as much womanizing which is core to his character.
Very clean. Story is centered on core values of loyalty, strengh and courage. Bond is very masculine and chases after women. Castings of M and Moneypenny are in no way in your face or detractors to the experience.
Woke content is minimal if has any to say, there are 2 black womans in the game but overall they are not annoying or playing up outside theauthority they have as superiols. Personally did not found rainbow flags or anything about woke stuff
