Methodology: Each score synthesizes audience discourse, critic and aggregator reception, and press coverage — weighed against the work itself, not any single source.
No developer statements, studio DEI initiatives, or marketing emphasizing progressive credentials accompany the remaster, which focuses solely on graphical and accessibility improvements.

I think the low ratings are a result of the Overton window shifting. Something that annoyed me 10 years ago has apparently become the norm for today’s gamer. Racial subplots between humans and non-humans; lesbian Ciri as this exceptional chosen one; comparing the 'differentness' of being gay to the 'differentness' of being a witcher; an elven trans character etc. etc. On many levels, the game reinforces leftist stereotypes—and while this was somewhat present in the source material, Sapkowski's prose, it wasn't nearly as one-sided.
Of course, there's the entire subplot of persecution in Redania, the fallen lodge of strong independent women sorceresses, and portraying religion exclusively as a bastion of fanaticism and violent superstition.
Sapkowski was also quite leftist for his time—and that’s why he was allowed to achieve such huge success in the postcommunist, pseudo-demoliberal Poland.
Played it for over 100 hours and almost zero wokeness.
