Several decisions reeking of fear of being cancelled. Larry Chiang (the butcher) In the original, he was a heavy stereotype of a fat Chinese man thick accent, a "meat" tattoo in Chinese characters on his neck. It was a total caricature, straight out of that old-school "Yellow Peril" cartoon style. In the remaster, he turned into a much more Caucasian/American-looking guy, minus the accent and the racial caricature. The issue isn't "fixing a bad stereotype." The issue is the double standard: when a character is a white or "safe" stereotype, nobody touches it. But when it’s Asian (or any other "minority"), suddenly it becomes an absolute priority. Capcom claimed the old design "distracted from the story." Ok.... But if the argument is about fidelity and respect for the source material, then actually respect the source material. Or just admit you're modernizing it to appease activists and leave it at that.
This is where the censorship becomes most obvious: they’ve completely removed the "Erotic" category from the photography system. You no longer get Prestige Points for cleavage, panties, upskirt shots nothing. They tweaked survivor outfits (removing the "whale tail" look and making Cheryl’s dress less revealing) and changed the scene for Kent’s "sexiest shot." Capcom trotted out the classic line: "It’s not because of the cultural climate; it’s because rewarding that doesn't make sense in a survival context." Right. As if Frank West was a serious photojournalist back in 2006, rather than a guy who scored points for snapping pics of zombies with their panties showing or doing crazy things and from strange angles while the mall turned into a slaughterhouse. The game still lets you take the photo if you want; it just doesn't give you points for it. It’s the corporate version of "you can look, but that’s it—otherwise, we’ll have a problem with it."
Meanwhile, the violence and gore remain high. torture, canni...: okay. Visible panties and cleavage: problematic. The hypocrisy is glaring.
Cliff Hudson’s (the Vietnam vet) dialogue was cleaned up. References to the Viet Cong and calling Frank a communist were removed. It’s more generic now. Again: the character was a madman with severe PTSD. Sanitizing his dialogue strips away part of what made him disturbing. The “Frank the Pi..” achievement was renamed (obviously).
